Uganda U20 Men’s National Football Team sealed a spot at the 2022 U20 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday after defeating Sudan 2-0 in the semi final of the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers.
Jackson Mayanja’s side had to do it the hard way, requiring two second half goals to get the job done. Rogers Torach and captain Isma Mugulusi scored the two goals for Uganda who are hoping to defend the title they won two years ago.
Torach fired Uganda into the lead on 54 minutes before the returning Mugulusi put the contest beyond reasonable doubt.
Sudan finished the game with ten players after their defender was sent off for a reckless challenge on Rogers Mugisha.
Like it was the case in their loss to Ethiopia on Saturday, the Hippos once again missed several players due to reported COVID-19 positive tests.
Despite missing four players who were ruled out of the tie after reportedly testing positive for COVID-19, Uganda was too strong for the hosts. Ibrahim Kasinde, Simon Ssemayange, Abasi Kyeyune and Haruna Lukwago were all ruled out of the semifinal clash.
Victory sends Uganda to their second successive appearance at the AFCON finals’ tournament. The 2023 edition will be held in Egypt.
