Uganda Netball in Turmoil: Federation Suspends National Women’s Super League

The Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) has temporarily suspended the National Women’s Netball Super League until further notice due to unspecified ‘unavoidable circumstances,’ this after the league games scheduled for last weekend at Kibuli did not take place. The Netball federation’s Planning and Organizing Committee communicated this decision to the team managers through a letter, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused.

UNF has previously mentioned financial difficulties as a hindrance to its operations, including the closure of its offices in December last year due to rent arrears amounting to UGX 12M. Additionally, Sarah Babirye Kityo, the Uganda Netball Federation president, recently appeared before a Parliamentary Adhoc Committee and accused the National Council of Sports General Secretary, Dr. Patrick Bernard Ogwel, of requesting kickbacks from Government funds intended for federations.

This suspension highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the UNF and the potential impact on the development of the sport in the country. It is essential for the UNF to resolve these issues as soon as possible to ensure the continuation of the league and the growth of netball in Uganda.
