NBS Sport journalist, Gerald Mutumba, emerged as the proud recipient of the Plascon USPA Journalism Award in the Broadcast category for July. The accolade is a resounding acknowledgment of his dedication to storytelling that goes beyond the surface, delving into the heart of sports narratives.
Mutumba’s award-winning story, “Meet Chess Prodigy Alvin: Chasing a Dream from the Ghetto to the World,” resonated deeply with audiences and judges alike. The story sheds light on the journey of a young chess prodigy, Alvin, as he embarked on a path to greatness from the confines of the ghetto.
Through Mutumba’s lens, the story was more than moves on a chessboard; it was a tale of determination, dreams, and the resilience to overcome the odds.
When asked about his feelings regarding being named the USPA Journalist of July in the broadcast category, Mutumba said, “I feel great for having won this award because the competition was stiff from other broadcasters.”
But what was the story that earned Mutumba this well-deserved win? He explains, “Before I went for the shoot, I had to first go on the locus to understand the nature of the story I would report about.” This insight into the environment and context of the story allowed him to capture the essence of Alvin’s journey with authenticity and depth.
With this understanding, he approaches each story as a reporter and as a medium for change, amplifying voices that deserve to be heard.
As we celebrate his accolade, we also celebrate the power of storytelling to shape perspectives, evoke emotions, and inspire change on the sports scene.
