Taking charge of transforming the golf narrative in their communities, the youth are at the forefront of a groundbreaking initiative led by Isaiah and his AFRIYEA Golf Academy program in Fort Portal, Uganda. This bold move aims to democratize access to golf among the country’s youth by introducing the game to every child in school. Through grassroots development and nurturing talent from a young age, the academy strives to make golf more inclusive and accessible.
The renewed focus on junior golf participation includes the establishment of school golf clubs in Fort Portal, a strategic effort to raise awareness and interest among young learners. These school clubs not only teach the fundamentals of golf but also instill valuable leadership skills and innovative approaches to the sport. By combining traditional coaching with creative entry points, the academy aims to spark a genuine passion for golf in the next generation.
Despite challenges in popularizing golf in Uganda, especially in rural areas where it is perceived as elitist and male-dominated, AFRIYEA Golf Academy remains committed to breaking down barriers. Isaiah Mwesige, the academy’s CEO, stresses the importance of inspiring underprivileged children to engage with golf, envisioning a future where the sport serves as a platform for social change and environmental advocacy.
The untapped talent in Uganda is evident in the success of individuals like Ronald Rugumayo, who shattered a 50-year-plus record to become the first Ugandan golfer to make a cut at DP World Tour. Rugumayo’s achievements serve as a testament to Uganda’s potential to produce world-class golfers on the global stage, inspiring children who look up to him.
Collaborating with schools like Tooro Parents Education Centre in Fort Portal, the AFRIYEA Golf Academy is actively working towards creating a new generation of golf stars.
