The second round of the national rally championship has brought anxiety within the rally fraternity, with top drivers getting ready to rumble in the Southern Motor Club (SMC) rally this weekend in Greater Masaka. Joshua Muwanguzi, one of the drivers to look out for, is working on his Subaru N12 car to ensure a podium finish, while Paul Musaazi, the navigator to former champion Ponsiano Lwakataka, says his crew is ready to dust Greater Masaka.
“We are spending more time in the garage to ensure that the car is in its best condition. We are going to Masaka for nothing less than a podium finish,” revealed Muwanguzi.
The Clubman rally championship reigning champion was one of the Ugandan drivers who were in Kenya to witness last week’s Kenya Safari rally. He admits that the World Rally Championship event is a class above Ugandan drivers.
“There is a crew that negotiates a corner without any braking and then flat out to the maximum. The speed, the courage, types of cars, and organization are incomparable to our local setup,” he revealed.
Muwanguzi is currently 6th in the standings, with Jas Mangat leading with 60 points, and Jonas Matayo and Ponsiano Lwakataka coming second and third with 51 and 49 points respectively.
A total of 31 drivers have registered for the rally to take place in the districts of Masaka, Lwengo, Kyotela, Bukomansimbi, and Kalungu. Reigning National champion Yasin Nasser won last year’s SMC rally.
