Mucureezi Bundles Vipers Out of Uganda Cup

The Stanbic Uganda cup will have a new champion after the elimination of Vipers SC by Kitara FC on Sunday. The defending champions bowed out of the competition after a 5-4 penalties away loss to Kitara fc in the quarter final played in Masindi. The game ended 2-2 in normal time with Yunus Sentamu and Bright Anukani from the spot scoring for the Venons before old boy Paul Mucureezi’s brace from penalty kicks put an end to the visiting fans’ hopes. In the spot kicks, Karim Watambala missed his kick before Mucureezi sunk his former side with the winning penalty that sent the home fans into merriment.

It is the first time that The Royals have progressed to the semifinals of the competition and head coach Brian Senyondo believes they were more disciplined tactically.

“Vipers did everything but I think tactically we were very organized. We were not very clinical and the combination play was not right. We were resilient and I want to congratulate the boys. We cannot be more happy than this, it is massive,” noted Ssenyondo, whose side is also enjoying the StarTimes Uganda premier league summit. Kitara joins third tier side Paule Lions, premier league sides NEC and BUL FC in the Uganda cup semifinals.

The two sides meet again in the league at the same venue this Friday with third placed defending champions hoping to leapfrog Kitara with victory.
