KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka has lauded the renovated Nakivubo stadium as a pivotal addition to Kampala’s skyline. She made the comments at the grand opening of the stadium presided over by President Museveni.
“This place is beautiful. It is a sight to reckon with in the night. This is a welcome addition to our skyline,” remarked Kisaka.
The stadium at Nakivubo War Memorial Grounds, stands as a multi-purpose arena in the heart of Kampala. With redevelopment works now completed, its capacity has been boosted to accommodate 35,000 spectators.
Kisaka expressed pride in the stadium’s transformation stating, “As KCCA, we are proud to have such a facility in our area. It is a multipurpose facility that will be used for sports and other extracurricular activities.”
The refurbishment of Nakivubo Stadium started in 2017 and has seen extensive improvements to the grounds, including the integration of retail spaces within the stadium’s perimeter walls.
The grounds previously held home games for SC Villa and Police SC and the reconstruction was a collaborative effort between the Ugandan government and Ham Enterprises.
With Uganda set to host AFCON 2027 and CHAN 2024, it remains to be seen the role the stadium will play in those tournaments.
