Bomber Captain Matovu Reflects on Mandela Cup Experience, Eyes Boxing Champions League Glory

Uganda’s boxing team, the “Bombers,” returned home from a successful outing at the Mandela Boxing Cup in Durban, South Africa. NBS Sports had the exclusive opportunity to speak with team captain Ukasha Matovu this morning, who shared his experiences and aspirations.

Matovu led a squad of seven elite boxers who collectively secured five medals – four bronze and a silver medal for Erina Namutebi. The team’s impressive performance brought home a total of UGX 33 Million in prize money.

Matovu himself secured a bronze medal with victories over Mauritius’s Jean Vadamootoo and Zimbabwe’s Mpofu before falling to Congo’s Ntumba in the semi-finals. Reflecting on his first Mandela Cup as captain, Matovu described it as an “eye-opening experience.”

“While I didn’t achieve the personal result I had hoped for,” he said, “I am a believing muslim with strong faith and am content with the team’s overall performance.”

Matovu went on to express the profound honor of being named team captain: “It was a dream come true,” he admitted. “The pressure was immense, knowing I had to lead by example and win.”

The Captain’s primary objective at the Mandela Cup was to return with medals, and with the team’s success, he has undeniably achieved that goal. Looking ahead, Matovu sets his sights on the Boxing Champions League, where he hopes to claim the welterweight championship title after missing out on the finals last year due to illness.

Ukasha Matovu’s determination and leadership were instrumental in the Bombers’ success at the Mandela Cup. With his focus firmly set on the Boxing Champions League, fans can expect an even stronger performance from Uganda’s boxing captain.
