Hon Jimmy Akena, the President of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) and Lira Municipality Member of Parliament, has secured the presidency of the Federation of Motorsports Clubs of Uganda (FMU). Akena’s election marks a significant transition in the leadership of the federation, succeeding Dipu Ruparelia, who opted not to seek re-election.
Akena emerged victorious over his opponents, including former FMU President George Fred Kagimu and former rally driver John Burrows Lumu. The vote count reveals Akena’s decisive lead with 57 votes, while Kagimu trailed with 16 votes and Lumu garnered one vote.
Speaking NBS Sport earlier regarding his candidacy, Akena outlined his key objectives, emphasizing his commitment to aligning the federation with the new Sports Act. He expressed his intention to ensure compliance with the legislation to facilitate access to government resources for the federation’s operations.
“I have been following and we have worked on so many things together. I want to ensure that we conform with the new Act so that we can access government resources. By virtue of my position as a legislator, I believe I am more suitable to oversee this process,” remarked Akena.
Akena’s tenure as President of FMU is poised to usher in a new era for motorsports in Uganda, with a focus on regulatory compliance and strategic development aligned with the nation’s evolving sports landscape.
