The American Football Federation, in collaboration with The Aliguma Foundation, made a significant stride in sports development by introducing American football to the Acholi Quarters slums.
The launch event took place at the slum’s playground, a venue well-known for hosting the Slum Soccer Tournament, drawing enthusiastic participation from children eager to explore the new sport.
Okeng Steven George, President of the American Football Federation, expressed his excitement about the partnership and revealed plans for regular training sessions aimed at nurturing talent within the community.
The recognition of flag football as an Olympic sport, coupled with Uganda’s aspirations for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, served as a motivational factor behind the initiative. The introduction of American football is expected to foster talent development and create new opportunities for aspiring athletes.
Aliguma Ritah, CEO of The Aliguma Foundation, attributed the success of the endeavor to support received from the Global Sports Mentorship program, facilitated by the American Embassy in Uganda. She said this support inspired and enabled the initiative to take root in the community.
