The Uganda Hockey Association Uganda Cup returned with a thrilling set of matches in the first round, marking a significant comeback after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Established in 1950, the Uganda Cup is one of the longest-running domestic cup competitions in Ugandan sports.
In the Women’s Division, defending champions Wananchi displayed their dominance with a resounding 7-0 victory over Makerere. The match saw impressive performances from Anyango and Mbabazi, each netting braces.
In other matches, Wananchi HDF overcame WHC Historicals 4-1, while Deliverance Church secured a 2-0 win against Weatherhead.
The Men’s Division featured high-scoring encounters, with Weatherhead, the defending champions, asserting their superiority with an 11-1 demolition of KHC Originals. Opio was the standout player, scoring four goals.
Kampala also showcased offensive prowess, defeating Titans 10-1, with Mutenyo achieving a hat trick, and Agaba and Musumba each contributing two goals.
Wananchi’s men mirrored their women’s team’s success, overpowering Thunders 9-1, with Owori, Baguma, and Tumukunde all scoring twice.
Badgers triumphed 5-1 against City Lions, highlighted by Mukama’s two goals, while Makerere edged out Rockets 3-2, thanks to a brace from Kaketo.
