Government to Build UGX 14 Billion Stadium at Kyambogo University

The National Council of Sports (NCS) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kyambogo University to construct a state-of-the-art football facility, which will serve as a training ground for the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The signing ceremony was attended by the State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, NCS Chairman Ambrose Tashobya, and Kyambogo University Chancellor Prof. Eli Katunguka. The project, expected to be completed within five months, will cost Shs14.3 billion and will be executed by the UPDF Engineering Brigade.

Hon. Peter Ogwang expressed confidence in the UPDF’s ability to deliver the project on time, citing their ongoing work at the Namboole renovation.

“We have confidence in UPDF who have been contracted to construct the training ground. We witnessed the incredible work done at Namboole renovation which is still on-going. We are sure the work will be delivered on time,” remarked Ogwang.

Prof. Katunguka highlighted the significance of the new facility for the university and local communities.

“We are glad that NCS identified Kyambogo University as one of the places where the CHAN and AFCON training facilities will be put. We are confident that these facilities will help develop sports within the university and the surrounding communities,” stated Katunguka.

The project will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will include grading the facility, constructing perimeter fencing, dressing rooms, a drainage and water system, a power generator, and lavatories, along with the installation of floodlights.

The second phase will add a VIP stand, medical room, administrative offices, and tennis and basketball courts.

Uganda, along with Kenya and Tanzania, secured the rights to co-host the 2027 AFCON finals. The CHAN tournament will act as a precursor for the three countries’ collaborative hosting of the prestigious event.
