Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured the French Cup with a 2-1 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday, in what was Kylian Mbappe’s final appearance for the club. The win at Lille’s Stade Pierre-Mauroy completed a domestic treble for PSG, who also won the Ligue 1 and French Super Cup titles this season.
Dembele opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a header from a Nuno Mendes cross. Fabian Ruiz doubled the advantage shortly after with a strike from a tight angle.
Lyon’s Jake O’Brien reduced the deficit ten minutes into the second half, but PSG held firm with a crucial save from Gianluigi Donnarumma ensuring the victory.
The match was overshadowed by earlier clashes between rival fans at a motorway toll south of Lille, involving approximately 300 supporters. The incidents resulted in injuries and property damage, with two coaches set on fire. French President Emmanuel Macron, who attended the final, condemned the violence.
PSG coach Luis Enrique praised his team’s performance and reflected on Mbappe’s departure.
“We played the final very well with great intensity. It has been a good season, and we look forward to coming back stronger,” said Enrique.
He acknowledged the emotional challenge for Mbappe, stating, “It has been a difficult season for him because, after seven years and all he has achieved, it is always hard to say goodbye.”
Mbappe, PSG’s all-time top scorer with 256 goals in 308 appearances, expressed his mixed emotions about leaving.
“Saying that it’s all over makes my heart ache. What I’ve had here, I’ll never find anywhere else,” the 25-year-old said.
