As the world turns its focus towards the Olympic Games in France next month, the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) has received a significant financial boost from Nile Breweries Limited. The brewer has committed 200 million Ugandan shillings to support the nation’s preparation and participation in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Uganda will be among the 206 nations and territories represented at the Games, which will see nearly 15,000 athletes compete across various disciplines from July 26, 2024. This sponsorship comes as a timely support with just 45 days remaining until the global event kicks off.
While the Ugandan government remains the primary funder for the Olympic team, partnerships with private entities such as Nile Breweries play a crucial role in enhancing the athletes’ preparation and overall performance. This infusion of funds will aid in better training facilities, equipment, and logistics for the Ugandan athletes.
So far, 25 Ugandan athletes have qualified for the Paris Games, representing disciplines including athletics, rowing, cycling, and swimming. Additionally, the national rugby team stands a chance to become the second Ugandan team sport to qualify for the Olympics, provided they succeed in the upcoming repechage tournament in France later this month.
At the last Olympic Games, Uganda achieved notable success, securing four medals: a gold and silver from Joshua Cheptegei, another gold from Peruth Chemutai, and a bronze from Jacob Kiplimo. Historically, Uganda has won a total of 11 Olympic medals, comprising four gold, four silver, and three bronze medals, with all accolades coming from boxing and athletics.
This sponsorship from Nile Breweries is expected to enhance Uganda’s prospects at the Paris 2024 Olympics, fostering hope for more podium finishes.
