Poland’s Euro 2024 campaign has suffered a significant setback as star striker Robert Lewandowski has been ruled out of their opening match against the Netherlands due to a thigh injury. The Barcelona forward sustained the injury during Poland’s recent 2-1 victory over Turkey.
Team doctor Jacek Jaroszewski confirmed that Lewandowski has a torn biceps femoris muscle and will miss the crucial first fixture.
“We are doing everything so that Robert can play in the second match against Austria,” Jaroszewski stated. This injury places additional pressure on Poland, who have been drawn into a tough group alongside the Netherlands, Austria, and France.
Poland’s manager, Michal Probierz, initially expressed optimism about Lewandowski’s condition following the Turkey match, but the latest medical update has dashed hopes of a quick recovery. With the Netherlands and pre-tournament favourites France in their group, Poland’s chances of advancing depend heavily on Lewandowski’s presence and form.
Lewandowski, who captains the national team, finished the La Liga season on a high note, scoring 11 goals and providing three assists in his last 15 appearances.
