NEC Football Club have completed the signing of highly-rated striker Emmanuel Ajo from relegated Busoga United. The 23-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the Lugogo-based club.
Ajo enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough season in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League with the now-relegated Busoga United, emerging as one of the surprise packages of the recently concluded campaign.
Despite Busoga’s struggles, which saw them finish 14th and become relegated to the FUFA Big League, Ajo shone brightly, netting 9 league goals and providing 3 assists in 29 appearances.
The young forward, who was the Pilsner SUPL Player of the Month for May, did not go unnoticed, with reigning champions SC Villa and title challengers Vipers both reportedly interested in acquiring his services.
However, Ajo has now opted to continue his development at NEC, who finished 6th in the league last season and were runners-up in the Stanbic Uganda Cup.
Ajo’s journey to the top flight has been a remarkable one. The striker joined Busoga United at the start of the 2023/24 campaign, having previously been the top scorer in the 2022/23 Jinja 4th Division League with 17 goals for Kakira Cheries.
His impressive form at the lower level earned him the opportunity to showcase his talent in the UPL, and he certainly seized it with both hands.
In one memorable match against Vipers, Ajo even played as an emergency goalkeeper after the visiting side’s custodian was sent off, further highlighting his versatility and dedication to the cause.
NEC, who have already secured the signings of FUFA Big League top scorer Dickson Niwamanya, veteran midfielder Muzamir Mutyaba and Viane Ssekajugo, will be hoping Ajo’s arrival can help them mount a stronger challenge for honours next season.
Meanwhile, NEC forward Cromwell Rwothomio also signed a three-year contract extension for the Lugogo-based side.
