The Netherlands overcome a resolute Romania side with a comfortable 3-0 victory at the Munich Football Arena on Tuesday, July 2nd, to book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship.
Despite Romania’s early commitment and pressing, it was the Dutch who opened the scoring in the 20th minute.
Cody Gakpo, the Liverpool attacker, cut inside and unleashed a powerful strike past Florin Nita to give the Oranje the lead.
The goal seemed to provide a significant boost to the Netherlands, who proceeded to dominate the remainder of the match.
Tijjani Reijnders and Stefan de Vrij both came close to doubling the lead in the latter minutes of the first half, but the resolute Romanian defense, led by the impressive Radu Dragusin, managed to keep the scoreline at 1-0 going into the break.
The second half saw the Netherlands continue to assert their authority, with Reijnders and Memphis Depay both denied by desperate Romanian defending.
Virgil van Dijk’s header hit the post, and Gakpo’s instinctive finish was ruled out for offside, but the pressure eventually paid off.
In the 83rd minute, Gakpo demonstrated his skill to get past Dragusin and set up Donyell Malen to make it 2-0.
Malen then added a third goal in stoppage time, putting the game to bed and sealing a comfortable victory for the Netherlands.
Romania’s campaign will be remembered with pride, having progressed past the group stage for the first time since 2000, but they were ultimately outclassed by a dominant Dutch side.
The Netherlands, on the other hand, will march on to the quarter-finals, brimming with confidence after a convincing performance. The win against Romania is their first Euro knockout win in 20 years.
The Oranje will be hoping to keep their impressive campaign alive when they face Turkey in the quarter-finals on Saturday, July 6th, at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
