Uganda Mourns Susan Kafumbe, One of Women’s Basketball Pioneers

Mrs. Susan Kabejja Kafumbe Mukasa, a trailblazer in Ugandan women’s basketball, passed away on July 2, 2024.

Born on March 15, 1963, she played a pivotal role in shaping the sport in Uganda, particularly in the women’s division when she played for the Lady Bucks basketball club.

Mukasa was instrumental in the Lady Bucks’ dominance during the 2000s, playing alongside fellow basketball legends Peninnah Kabenge, Jennifer Nsibongire, and Dorothy Nakiryowa.

Her efforts were crucial in helping the Lady Bucks secure their third consecutive FUBA Classic League title in 2000, overcoming fierce competition from A-1 Challenge.

In addition to her on-court achievements, Mukasa served on the FUBA Executive Committee as treasurer in 2002 under Chairman Henry Musisi. She was revered by her colleagues for her level-headed and selfless leadership. She retired from this role in 2007, choosing not to seek another term.

Susan was married to the late Abbey Kafumbe Mukasa, former NCS boss, an ardent Express FC fan, and a significant supporter of Tornado Cricket Club.

Mrs. Susan Kabejja Kafumbe Mukasa leaves behind a legacy of excellence and dedication in Ugandan sports, inspiring future generations of athletes and leaders.
