Brighton & Hove Albion Women’s Football Club has signed Tanzanian striker Aisha Masaka.
The 20-year-old joins the England Women’s Super League side from BK Hacken in Sweden.
The English club announced the signing on July 17, stating, “We are delighted to announce the signing of striker Aisha Masaka from BK Hacken on undisclosed terms, subject to the usual regulatory processes.”
Masaka, who has earned 15 caps for Tanzania and scored nine goals since her debut in 2021, expressed her excitement about joining the club. “I am so excited to join the Club,” said the former Young Africans Princess player.
Zoe Johnson, managing director of women’s and girls’ football at Brighton & Hove Albion, welcomed Masaka, noting her high-level competition in Sweden and her participation in the Champions League with Hacken.
“She’s competed at a high and testing level in Sweden and represented Hacken in the Champions League,” Johnson added.
Johnson highlighted Masaka’s physicality and goal-scoring prowess, stating, “Masaka is a physical striker who is dominant on the ball and a natural goalscorer. We’re looking forward to welcoming her to Albion ahead of the new season.”
During her two seasons at BK Hacken, Masaka helped the team finish second in the Swedish League and reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League last season before losing to PSG.
Masaka becomes the first Tanzanian player to join a team in the England Women’s Super League. Other Tanzanian women footballers playing professionally abroad include Oppa Clement Tukumbuke (Besiktas, Turkey), Diana Lucas (Ame S.F.K, Turkey), Maimuna Kaimu (ZED FC, Egypt), Clara Luvanga (Al Nasi FC, Saudi Arabia), Juletha Singano (Juarez, Mexico), and Enekia Kasonga (Eastern Flames, Saudi Arabia).
