The Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC), led by President Dr. Donald Rukare, has formed a significant partnership with the National Forestry Authority (NFA) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
This collaboration was marked by the signing of the Sports for Climate Action and Sports for Nature frameworks.
Moses Egaru, the country representative for IUCN in Uganda, expressed his excitement about re-engaging with the sports community, recalling his past as a basketball player.
Egaru emphasized that the partnership aims to foster transformative nature-positive actions across sports by 2040.
Juliet Mubi, Public Relations Officer for NFA, urged athletes to take on the role of ambassadors for forest conservation.
She highlighted the ambitious target of restoring 400 acres of degraded forests in various reserves by 2040, with the ultimate goal of increasing Uganda’s forest cover from 13% to 24%.
Dr. Donald Rukare announced that the UOC is close to finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding with the NFA, which will solidify their commitment to restoring 400 acres of forest cover.
Additionally, the UOC will sign two significant declarations: the Sports for Nature Declaration and the UN Climate Action Plan, both of which promote the role of sports in forest conservation.
