From the World Cross Country Championships, World Junior Championships, Commonwealth Games, Diamond League, World Championships, and Olympic Games, Joshua Cheptegei had won a gold medal in each event but only for one.
A golden medal in the men’s 10,000m at the Olympics was the missing piece in his glamorous cabinet but not any more.
His only gold medal at Olympics was in the 5,000m in Tokyo where he also won silver in the 10,000m.
The 27-year-old ensured that his long distance career is entirely glittering on Friday, August 2, 2024.
Cheptegei put up a slow but sure show at a fully packed Stade de France on Friday night reaping gold in an Olympic record breaking time of 26:23.14.
His medal tally now stands at 11 gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal in his colorful career.
In addition to his latest achievement in the 10,000m, he has done it before five times in the same race, thrice in the World Championships in Doha 2019, Eugene 2022, and Budapest 2023.
His other two gold medals in the 10,000m came during the Commonwealth in Gold Coast 2018 and World Juniors Championships in Eugene 2014.
Three of his other gold medals were from the 5,000m at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, Doha Diamond League in 2019, and Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast in 2018.
He also won two gold medals in the senior race and senior team event, respectively at the World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus in 2019.
Cheptegei’s silver medals came from the 10,000m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 2017 World Championships in London while he won bronze in the senior race at the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst in 2023.
