NBS Sport, already the nation’s leading sports broadcaster, is poised to elevate its game even further.
This was revealed by Kin Kariisa, the Group CEO of Next Media, NBS Sport’s parent company, during a recent event honouring the team behind the successful broadcast of the 2024 Rugby Africa Cup on the channel .
Kariisa unveiled ambitious plans to enhance the station’s capacity and technological capabilities, to ensure that Ugandans have unparalleled access to both local and international sporting events.
“Our interest as NBS Sport and as Next Media in general is to make sure that we cover every sporting event in this country,” he said before adding:
“We are investing in technology, but also in human capital, to make sure that we’re at the level of world standards because many viewers across the world depend on us to give them feeds of international competitions that take place in Uganda.”
This strategic focus on technology and capacity building is not just about maintaining NBS Sport’s current status but also about setting new benchmarks in sports broadcasting.
The station has already demonstrated its prowess with the Rugby Africa Cup, held at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole between July 20 and 28, where it provided comprehensive coverage with crystal-clear picture quality and insightful commentary.
Joseph Kigozi, the Deputy CEO of Next Media and General Manager of NBS Sport, echoed Kariisa’s sentiments, and emphasised the station’s commitment to delivering top-tier broadcasts.
“The Rugby Africa Cup broadcast on NBS Sport was amazing. We thank the union and all the partners and sponsors for a wonderful job. Entrusting NBS Sport as the official broadcast partner was a vote of confidence,” Kigozi said.
“This is just the beginning. We’ll continue to learn, to do better, and to Champion Ugandan Sport.”
To recognize the hard work and dedication of the team behind the broadcast, over 50 NBS Sport employees were awarded certificates of appreciation by Kariisa and Kigozi.
Kigozi thanked the team saying, “I wouldn’t have asked for a better team, you delivered a wonderful job during the Rugby Africa Cup.”
The team, from sub-departments like Outside Broadcast Crew, MCR Studio Team, Marketing, Brand and Administration, Camera, Digital, and Design, were instrumental in the seamless execution of the tournament’s broadcast.
Kariisa highlighted that NBS Sport is already undergoing significant upgrades, particularly in technology to ensure that it flawlessly broadcasts the upcoming international tournaments that will be held in Uganda.
He revealed that the station is already on course to cover the forthcoming international tournaments saying, “We have engaged the union (Uganda Rugby Union), they want us to broadcast next year’s competition too.”
“But also, there is the Kampala Marathon coming up in December, the Golf DP World Tour, and many other international events that we shall cover,” he added.
By broadcasting the 2024 Rugby Africa Cup, NBS Sport set a precedent in African sports broadcasting.
That, coupled with local broadcasting achievements like being the first African station to broadcast the domestic hockey league live on television, are part of a broader commitment to Champion Ugandan Sport.
The station has also covered the Uganda Boxing Champions League, National Rugby 7s circuit, Ludo league, Pool, Basketball, Golf, and many other local sports events.
On the international scene, NBS Sport has successfully broadcast numerous major international tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), EURO 2024, the Olympics, the FIFA World Cup, and the English Premier League.
