After winning their first game of the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers for the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League against PVP Buyenzi of Burundi, the focus for Kawempe Muslim Ladies now turns to giants Simba Queens.
The FUFA Women Super League champions defeated Buyenzi 2-0 at Abebe Bekila Stadium in Ethiopia on Monday.
Agnes Nabukenya bagged a brace with her two goals coming in the either half of the game in the 32nd and 58th minutes.
Both teams endured the cold weather with the game delayed for over an hour due to a heavy downpour while the restart of the second half was also delayed for the same reason.
Speaking in the aftermath of the game, Kawempe’s head coach Ayub Khalifa heaped praise on her girls for the endurance and the magnitude of the game coming up.
“It was really a challenging experience to play in such weather conditions and I would like to appreciate my team for hanging on for victory,” Khalifa told the media in the post match press conference.
“We should have played better in terms of display but we shall take the three points because it is always important to win the first game in such tournaments.”
“Up next is an uphill task against one of the best teams in the region but we shall approach the game with a winning mentality and hopefully it will pay off,” he noted.
Simba thumped South Sudan side FAD 5-0 in the other Group B game that was played on the same day.
Kawempe and Simba are tied on three points after winning their opening games but the latter occupies the top spot on the standings with a better goal difference.
A place in the knockout stages will be at stake when they face off on Wednesday.
