Standard Chartered Bank has officially launched the 7th edition of its celebrated Standard Chartered Cup, a prestigious futsal tournament, at a press conference held at its headquarters on Speke Road.
The tournament, renowned for its association with Liverpool FC through the bank’s sponsorship, promises an exhilarating competition and an exclusive opportunity for football enthusiasts.
The SC Cup, a prominent 5-a-side football event, is set to offer an extraordinary prize this year. The champions will be rewarded with an unforgettable experience: tickets to see the much-anticipated Liverpool vs. Arsenal match at Anfield on 10 May 2025.
This unique prize underscores the tournament’s appeal and aligns with the bank’s commitment to delivering exceptional experiences for its participants.
At the press conference, Sanjay Rughani, CEO of Standard Chartered, expressed enthusiasm about the tournament and the ongoing partnership with Liverpool FC.
“Liverpool FC is a globally renowned football club, and our association with them is a source of immense pride,” Rughani said.
“The club embodies many of our core values and has a significant following in Uganda and beyond. This partnership supports our charitable initiatives, like the Future Makers programme, and helps us engage meaningfully with our clients and Liverpool FC supporters,” Rughani added.
He also highlighted the SC Cup as a platform to strengthen ties with corporate partners and enhance community engagement.
John Mwesigye, Chairperson of the SC Cup Steering Committee, elaborated on the tournament’s role.
“The SC Cup provides us with an excellent opportunity to engage with our clients, reward their loyalty, and promote our support for Liverpool FC. This fun-filled and interactive event not only celebrates football but also fosters camaraderie and sportsmanship.”
This year’s competition will feature 40 teams, each consisting of seven players. These teams will compete in 10-minute 5-a-side matches, with each team allowed two substitutes.
Participants will include representatives from Standard Chartered’s corporate partners, SME banking clients, Liverpool FC fans, and media partners. Entry is by invitation only.
Edgar Watson, CEO of FUFA and the Edgars Youth Programme, highlighted the technical aspects of the tournament.
“Our team has managed the futsal tournament since its inception in 2015. We are committed to ensuring a fair and professional competition by verifying all players to prevent the participation of professionals,” Watson explained.
He emphasized the competitive nature of the tournament despite its short duration, encouraging teams to prepare thoroughly.
The tournament will commence with a group stage, where the 40 teams will be divided into eight groups, playing round-robin matches.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout rounds, culminating in the final showdown.
Margaret Kigozi Namulindwa, Head of Corporate Affairs, Brand, and Marketing, provided details on the registration process.
Companies wishing to participate must submit a validation letter from their Human Resources department, confirming the employment status of each player, along with copies of their IDs. The registration deadline is 30 August 2024.
“Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage workmates, families, and friends to join us for the local tournament on September 7.
In the spirit of inclusivity, we also encourage teams to include female players, as this is an amateur and enjoyable event designed to reward employees.”
With the 7th edition of the Standard Chartered Cup on the horizon, anticipation is building for another exciting and memorable tournament, underscoring the bank’s dedication to fostering community spirit and celebrating football.
