Ugandan golfer Martha Babirye has surged to the top of the leaderboard after the second day of the 2024 Johnnie Walker Uganda Ladies Golf Open at Entebbe Golf Club.
Babirye, a three-time champion, shot a solid 76 to take control of the tournament ahead of Saturday’s decisive final round.
Babirye now faces intense competition from a trio of Tanzanian golfers in what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the tournament.
Iddy Hussein Madina holds second place, while Neema Olomi and Hawa Wanyeche are tied for third, just two strokes behind the leader.
Wanyeche, who had led the field after an impressive 3-over-74 on day one, now finds herself in a tight race for the title.
Martha Babirye, despite leading, expressed some dissatisfaction with her putting performance but is ready to be at her best on the final day.
“I didn’t putt well,” she admitted. “I’m not happy with how I played, but come tomorrow, I know what to do.”
When asked about her strategy for the final round against the three Tanzanians, Babirye emphasized a cautious and methodical approach.
“I’ll take it hole by hole,” she said. “The front nine has been tricky for me, but I believe I’ve given myself a chance. Let’s wait and see.”
Only two strokes separate the top four contenders, setting the stage for a classic showdown.
With defending champion Peace Kabasweka not participating this year, Babirye remains Uganda’s best hope for a victory.
The final round on Saturday will be a test of nerve and skill as she aims to secure the title on home soil.
The tournament’s bronze category will also conclude tomorrow, along with a subsidiary round dominated by amateur golfers as they prepare for next week’s men’s competition.
