Thousands of runners gathered in Kampala on Sunday, August 25th, for the 13th edition of the Rotary Cancer Run, a significant event aimed at raising funds and awareness for the fight against cancer in Uganda.
The run, which was broadcast live on NBS Sport, attracted participants from all walks of life, united in their commitment to a worthy cause.
Uganda, unfortunately, faces a pressing cancer crisis, with approximately 35,000 new cases diagnosed annually.
Sadly, 22,000 of these individuals succumb to the disease due to late diagnosis.
To address this critical issue, the Rotary Cancer Run is supporting the establishment of a state-of-the-art cancer center and bunker at Nsambya Hospital.
This ambitious project is slated for completion by 2027, but currently faces a funding gap of Ug.Shs 9 billion.
Governor Steven Mwanje, chairman of the Rotary Cancer Run, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the participants for their unwavering support.
He emphasized the immense importance of the project, urging more partners to come forward and contribute to this noble cause.
“The cancer center and bunker will revolutionize cancer care in Uganda, providing access to life-saving treatments for countless patients,” Governor Mwanje stated.
Rotary leaders, including Mable Claire Nankya and Henry Luzinda, highlighted the crucial role of raising cancer awareness and engaging in environmental conservation efforts.
They underscored the interconnectedness of health and environmental well-being, emphasizing the importance of addressing both to create a sustainable and healthy future.
The Rotary Cancer Run serves as a powerful platform for uniting the community in the fight against cancer.
