Ugandan sprinter Tarsis Orogot, who recently competed in the Men’s 200m at the Paris 2024 Olympics, has captured the hearts of fans and even earned a nod from Nickelodeon, thanks to his unique choice of socks.
During the 200m heats, Orogot sported a pair of SpongeBob SquarePants branded socks, a move that quickly endeared him to viewers and brought him unexpected attention.
Orogot’s journey in the Paris Games saw him advance to the semi-finals, where he finished 6th in Heat One with a time of 20.64 seconds, missing out on a spot in the final.
Despite the disappointment, his quirky fashion statement did not go unnoticed.
Nickelodeon, the network behind the beloved cartoon character, acknowledged Orogot’s tribute with a shout-out on social media and sent him some SpongeBob gear as a token of appreciation.
The 21-year-old sprinter’s popularity surged not only due to his athletic prowess but also his relatable persona.
On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Orogot regularly engages with his followers, frequently sharing the phrase “Just a boy with a dream,” which has resonated with many, particularly in his home country of Uganda.
Orogot’s rise to fame began at the U20 World Championships in Nairobi in 2021, where he finished fourth in the 200m, setting a Ugandan national record of 20.37 seconds during the semifinals.
His talent continued to shine this year when he set a personal best and a new Ugandan record of 19.75 seconds in the 200m at the SEC Championship in Gainesville, Florida.
