Ugandan Olympian Hospitalized After Domestic Violence Incident

Ugandan long-distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away following a severe domestic violence incident in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya.

The news of her death was confirmed by Donald Rukare, Chairman of the Uganda Olympic Committee, on Thursday morning.

Cheptegei, 33, had been hospitalized in critical condition after an alleged attack by her boyfriend, Nickson Ndiema, last week.

Ndiema reportedly poured petrol on Cheptegei before setting her on fire, leaving both with life-threatening injuries. Despite efforts by doctors at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret, Cheptegei succumbed to her injuries.

Rukare expressed deep sorrow over Cheptegei’s passing, describing her as a dedicated athlete who proudly represented Uganda on the global stage. “We have lost a great talent and a committed sportswoman,” Rukare said in a statement.

“May her gentle soul rest in peace and we strongly condemn violence against women. This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure,” he added.

Cheptegei competed for Uganda at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where she finished 44th in the Women’s marathon with a time of 2:32:14. She had also achieved notable success in her career, including winning a silver medal at the 2023 Padova Women’s Marathon in Italy.

The incident that led to her hospitalization reportedly stemmed from a land dispute between Cheptegei and Ndiema. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter.

Cheptegei’s passing has sent shockwaves through the Ugandan sports community, with many athletes and officials expressing their condolences and calling for stronger action against domestic violence.
