After losing the first leg of the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa at Namboole in October 2004, the Uganda Cranes visited Bafana Bafana for the second leg in March 2005.
Striker Geoffrey Sserunkuma was dropped for the game in Kampala but was part of the Uganda Cranes team that played at Soccer City Stadium.
He spoke to NBS Sport narrating the experience of playing in a good stadium including when they were forced out of training.
“It was an exciting experience for the team because back then good stadiums were few and I remember us training over at Bidvest,” Sserunkuma noted.
“We were forced out of training because had trained for long hours yet the game was the next day.”
“Onto the game day, the atmosphere was electric at Soccer City and it played a part in their victory,” he recalls.
His colleagues have all retired and he remains the only active player and has recently joined Kataka from NEC.
A much younger generation is back in South Africa to battle with the Bafana Bafana in the AFCON qualifiers at Orlando Stadium.
