A former boxer, Kaweesi Richard, has transitioned to refereeing. The 30-year-old, born in Bwaise, Kampala, has quickly risen through the ranks to become one of the country’s top referees.
Richard’s journey into boxing began at a young age, influenced by his family of boxers. Despite being barred from participating in matches during his primary school days, his passion for the sport was evident.
His breakthrough came after meeting the late Zebra Senyange, who recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue a boxing career.
Although his early boxing career was marked by defeats, including losses against notable opponents like Mugisha Raymond and Kabugo Gerard, Senyange’s guidance proved invaluable.
Senyange’s decision to steer Richard towards refereeing marked a turning point in his career.
Since then, Richard has officiated several high-profile boxing matches, including the Kasujja Richard vs. Ssemuddu Muzamiru bout.
Despite facing challenges, including a near-fatal attack that forced him to retire from boxing, Richard has remained dedicated to his refereeing career.
He has overcome personal obstacles and officiating difficulties to establish himself as a respected figure in the sport.
