Czech Republic: Kayondo Carries Cranes Form to Liberec

Left-back Aziz Kayondo was one of the outstanding players during Uganda Cranes’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in the just concluded international window.

He was a notable performer in Cranes’ 2-2 draw away to South Africa before scoring a stunning goal in a 2-0 victory over Congo Brazzaville at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Kayondo is not looking back and has carried that form to his club Slovan Liberec in Czech Republic.

The former Vipers defender was vital in Liberec’s 2-all stalemate against Bohemians Praha in the Czech’s Chance Liga on Sunday.

Midfielder Jan Kovarik gave Praha the lead in the third minute off his midfield partner and namesake Jan Matousek.

The 21-year-old was fouled in the forbidden area and the referee pointed to the spot before forward Lubomir Tupta tacked it home for Liberec’s equaliser.

In the 35th minute, the hosts turned the game on its head through midfielder Marek Icha assisted by Kayondo.

However, Kayondo’s Liberec could not guard their 2-1 halftime lead conceding a 77th minute equaliser from midfielder Vladimir Zeman from Matej Hybs assist.

Both teams had a goal ruled out for offside later on with the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

After eight games, Kayondo’s Liberec is positioned 11th with nine points on the 16-team log.

They will return to action on Wednesday, September 25 visiting Povltavska FA in the MOL Cup while their next league game will be away to Dukla Praha on Saturday, September 28.
