The Kabalega Foundation is set to host the annual Kabalega Independence Run 2024, a significant event that will not only celebrate the legacy of the legendary Omukama Kabalega but also take a crucial step towards addressing the global climate crisis.
This year’s run, themed “Run to Celebrate a Hero’s Legacy, Run for a Green Future,” will serve as a platform to promote tree planting and greening communities in Bunyoro.
Recognizing the urgent need for environmental action, especially in the face of expanding oil and gas activities in the region, the Kabalega Foundation has launched an ambitious tree-planting campaign.
The initiative aims to plant 500,000 trees throughout the year, focusing on both woodlots and fruit trees. These trees will be distributed to individuals and communities who register to participate in the run.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of this green initiative, the foundation will provide training and guidance to residents on proper tree care and maintenance.
By empowering communities to nurture and protect their trees, the Kabalega Foundation hopes to create a lasting impact on the environment.
The tree-planting campaign will involve collaboration with various partners, including the Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, local leaders, and organizations such as Roofings Uganda Ltd., the National Forestry Authority, Prudential Uganda, and Next Media Services.
Together, they will work to raise awareness about environmental conservation and mobilize the community to participate in this vital effort.
