The Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) has partnered with the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) to lead a nationwide campaign to promote responsible gaming.
The initiative, set to launch on October 16, 2024, will bring together various stakeholders to discuss the intersection of gaming, sports, entertainment, and public health, focusing on creating a safer gaming environment.
The announcement was made during USPA’s Monthly Assembly held at the Uganda Olympic Committee offices on Monday.
Representatives from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Sports, gaming administrators, and journalists are expected to engage in conversations about promoting responsible gaming practices and curbing the risks of harmful gambling.
The campaign will also explore potential partnerships and the establishment of regulatory frameworks to ensure the community’s wellbeing.
In addition to launching the campaign, USPA President Moses Alayged Lubega confirmed that the association’s Elective Extraordinary Assembly (AGM) is scheduled for November 30, 2024.
A vetting committee has been reinstated to oversee the election process, ensuring transparency and smooth transitions within the leadership structure.
Furthermore, Lubega announced the return of the Plascon-USPA Media Awards, including the highly anticipated Sports Personality of the Month honours.
The annual gala, celebrating the 2023/24 media achievements, will be held early next year.
Lubega assured that all previous award winners would receive their prizes, and welcomed new partners, such as the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board, who will support the event.
Lubega also highlighted USPA’s remarkable financial turnaround. Despite inheriting a treasury shortfall, the association has managed to exceed its financial targets and clear its outstanding debts.
He also addressed recent rumours aimed at discrediting USPA, calling for civil discourse and a focus on professionalism.
