Manchester United goalkeeper Andrey Onana has made his second visit to Uganda, receiving a warm reception despite the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Cameroon and Kenya being played behind closed doors.
Onana, in Kampala with the Cameroon national team, had the opportunity to meet Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, at Sheraton Hotel on Sunday.
Tayebwa, a passionate Manchester United supporter, was thrilled to interact with the 28-year-old goalkeeper, who has garnered admiration from Ugandan fans since his first visit in October for the Cameroon-Zimbabwe match.
Tayebwa praised Onana for how well he has been embraced by Ugandan football enthusiasts, particularly by Manchester United’s loyal local fan base.
“He has a lot of fans here, and we’re glad he has settled in really well,” Tayebwa told the media.
“Even though Manchester United has had its struggles, it remains one of the biggest clubs in the world. The loyalty of our fans reflects that, and Onana has felt that love here in Uganda.”
Tayebwa also extended an invitation to the entire Manchester United squad, saying: “Onana, tell the Manchester United team to come and visit Uganda. The love they’ll experience here is like nowhere else.”
Onana’s presence in Uganda has further solidified his connection with local fans, as both his on-pitch performance and engaging personality continue to leave a lasting impression.
Cameroon will face Kenya at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, as part of the ongoing qualification campaign.
