The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGB) and the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) convened a crucial meeting on Wednesday, October 16, at Four Points by Sheraton to discuss responsible gaming practices and the challenges faced by players, particularly the youth.
The meeting, attended by key figures including USPA President Moses Alsayed Lubega, NLGB CEO Denis Munene, and Joseph Oluga, the Assistant General Secretary at the National Council of Sports, focused on the media’s role in shaping public perceptions of gaming and the need for collaboration among various stakeholders to address gambling addiction.
In his address, Oluga emphasized the media’s power to either promote awareness or exacerbate issues related to gaming. He also commended the government’s efforts in enhancing sports infrastructure, which he believes is crucial for nurturing healthy activities among the youth.
Mental health expert Ivan raised concerns about the increasing prevalence of gambling addiction, particularly among young people.
He warned that such addiction can lead to severe mental health problems, including anxiety and depression.
USPA President Lubega stressed the importance of responsible communication, urging journalists to report accurately and responsibly.
He argued that the media can play a crucial role in empowering the public and preventing addiction through informed reporting.
The meeting covered the stages of gambling addiction and its repercussions on individuals and families.
Participants called for increased awareness and education about the signs of gambling problems, reinforcing the media’s responsibility in disseminating this essential information.
