The Crested Cranes, Uganda’s national women’s football team, clinched a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in their first friendly encounter in Kinshasa on Sunday.
With standout performances from Fazila Ikwaput and Sylvia Kabene, Uganda showcased both skill and resilience, setting the stage for an exciting rematch this Wednesday.
The Cranes took an early lead when Ikwaput opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, putting the visitors up 1-0 at halftime.
DRC found the equalizer at the hour mark, fueling intensity on both sides.
But in the 77th minute, Kabene’s sharp finish restored the Cranes’ lead, sealing the game for Uganda.
Kabenge’s goal secured a significant morale boost as Uganda’s women’s team aims to continue building its momentum on the regional stage.
Head coach Sheryl Botes praised her squad’s discipline and determination, expressing hope for a repeat performance in the Wednesday rematch.
“The team showed true character and focus in maintaining their lead against a strong side,” Botes commented.
She added that the team would focus on refining their defense and capitalizing on offensive chances for the upcoming clash.
Botes will have high hopes that Ikwaput, Kabene, and their teammates will bring the same energy and tactical precision to deliver back-to-back victories in Kinshasa.
