The second edition of the Kampala Disability Festival 2024, held at Kampala City Hall, celebrated resilience, inclusion, and the transformative power of sports.
The event brought together people living with disabilities to compete in games such as wheelchair rugby, blind football, and inclusive Ludo, highlighting their capabilities and showcasing talents often overlooked.
Celebrating Abilities Beyond Limitations
The festival’s primary goal was to celebrate abilities, promote inclusivity, and provide a platform for people with disabilities to shine.
Wassja Patrick, the festival proprietor, emphasized the event’s broader purpose.
“This festival is not just about sports. It’s about creating opportunities, discovering talent, amplifying voices, and ensuring that inclusivity becomes a necessity, not just an option,” Wassja said.
He also announced plans to introduce inclusive sports into schools next year to further the cause.
Stories of Joy and Resilience
Participants shared heartfelt testimonies about how the festival had impacted their lives.
Muhammad, a 29-year-old wheelchair basketball player from Kawempe, spoke about the challenges faced by people with disabilities and the importance of such initiatives.
Para badminton player Flavia Basuuta expressed her joy, while former footballer Isaac Muhumuza praised the festival for helping him forge new friendships and connections.
Transforming Lives Through Sports
The games proved that people with disabilities can compete at the highest levels, dispelling misconceptions and inspiring others.
The festival served as a reminder of the unifying and transformative power of sports.
By highlighting the talents and resilience of participants, it also challenged societal norms about disability and inclusion.
As Uganda continues to push for inclusive sports and celebrate diversity, the Kampala Disability Festival stands as a shining example of how communities can come together to uplift and empower individuals, ensuring no one is left behind.
