6th SDG Run: A Champion Partnership for Uganda’s Green Future

Uganda is poised to host the 6th annual SDG Run on December 1, 2024, a significant event aimed at accelerating the country’s progress towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Launched by First Deputy Prime Minister Alitwala Rebecca Kadaga, the event will take place at the iconic Lugogo Cricket Oval.

This year’s theme, “Partnership for the Goals,” underscores the critical role of collaboration in addressing environmental challenges and achieving sustainable development.

Kadaga emphasized the urgent need for stricter environmental regulations and the implementation of existing laws.

She expressed disappointment over the non-implementation of the National Tree Planting Day, a provision enshrined in the National Forestry Authority Act.

The 6th SDG Run is focused on raising 20 million indigenous tree seedlings to support Uganda’s forest restoration efforts, aligned with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030).

Additionally, the event aims to raise funds for establishing regional tree nurseries and promoting sustainable practices nationwide.

Since its inception in 2017, the SDG Run has garnered significant support from government leaders, UN agencies, the private sector, civil society, and citizens.

This year’s event is expected to attract over 30,000 participants, including young climate activists like 11-year-old Grace Stuart Ninsiima, who is leading the charge for a sustainable future.
