President Yoweri Museveni has taken an unconventional swipe at the obsession with European football, urging young Africans to focus on the integration of the continent instead.
Speaking at a recent event at Statehouse, Museveni dismissed the idea of supporting European football clubs, emphasizing the importance of engaging in more impactful pursuits.
The President, in a light-hearted yet pointed manner, recounted being asked which European club he supports.
He appeared puzzled by the notion, saying, “What are those? There is something called Arsenal, and another one called something else? Please, please, please.”
Reflecting on his own past as a footballer, Museveni noted that he stopped playing the sport in 1966 and sees little sense in watching others play it now.
Museveni highlighted the importance of prioritizing African issues over distractions like European football, which he implied had little bearing on the continent’s future.
Arsenal is arguably the most popular Premier League club in Uganda. The club’s fanbase grew after the 2003/2004 season, when Arsenal won the EPL title. Despite not winning the title again, Arsenal fans in Uganda continue to be popular.
Ugandan fans are known for their devotion to Premier League teams, often watching them in bars, living rooms, and movie halls.
