A jubilant celebration of Arsenal’s victory over Manchester United tragically turned deadly in Lukaya town, Kalungu District, when a security guard fatally shot one fan and injured another.
The incident unfolded at the Uganda Cares building on Wednesday night, following Arsenal’s 2-0 triumph in the English Premier League.
Tensions escalated as Arsenal fans erupted in exuberant cheers, prompting complaints from the building’s manager, identified only as Banda.
The manager instructed the security guard, employed by Gardaworld Security Company, to intervene. Despite repeated warnings, the fans continued their celebrations.
The situation further deteriorated when the building’s owners switched off the electricity in an attempt to quell the commotion.
Amid the ensuing chaos, the guard discharged his firearm, tragically resulting in the death of John Ssenyonga, 30, and injuries to another fan known as Lawrence.
Greater Masaka Police Spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway.
The security guard, who is currently at large, is facing charges. Kasirye urged football fans to celebrate responsibly and avoid violence.
The incident has sparked outrage in Lukaya, with residents demanding accountability and questioning the use of lethal force by private security personnel.
Concerns have also been raised about the lack of proper regulation and oversight of private security firms.
