Andrew Opio has been crowned the Men’s Order of Merit winner for the 2024 Stanbic Mug of Mugs, achieving a remarkable 756 nett score across 10 mugs played.
This victory marks a significant milestone for Opio, who returned to the sport in 2019 after a 20-year hiatus.
Opio, who began playing golf as a child, showcased his dedication and skill throughout the year-long competition.
His consistent performance not only secured him the Order of Merit title but also earned him the prestigious opportunity to represent Uganda at the Finaritu Tournament at Sigona Golf Club in Nairobi, Kenya, from January 4-5, 2025. This all-expenses-paid trip fulfills a long-held dream for Opio.
“I’ve always dreamed of playing in Nairobi, and this year, my dream has come true,” Opio shared, expressing his excitement for the upcoming challenge. “It’s been a challenging journey, but I’m thrilled to represent Uganda on the international stage.”
The Stanbic Monthly Mug commenced in January and concluded this weekend at the Uganda Golf Course (UGC) in Kitante.
In the Ladies’ Order of Merit, Nancy Nsubuga emerged victorious with an impressive 715 nett score across 9 mugs.
Like Opio, Nsubuga has also earned the right to compete at Sigona Golf Club, showcasing the talent and dedication of Uganda’s female golfers.
The December edition of the tournament saw exceptional performances.
Hillary Ndungutse emerged as the Men’s Monthly Mug champion with an outstanding 69 nett score.
