The Uganda Rugby Union on Thursday 16th January announced a significant rebranding of its elite and tier 2 club rugby competitions.
This move, according to the Union, aims to streamline the structure and enhance the professionalism of the sport within the country.
The most notable change sees the Uganda Rugby Championship, the top-tier club competition, renamed the Uganda Rugby Premiership (URP).
This new name more accurately reflects the format of the competition, which now features a round-robin stage followed by exciting playoff matches to determine the champion.
Furthermore, the Regional Rugby Leagues, which act as feeder leagues for the Premiership, will now be known as Championships.
These four regional leagues will be specifically designated as:
- Eastern Rugby Championship (ERC)
- Central Rugby Championship (CRC)
- Northern Rugby Championship (NRC)
- Western Rugby Championship (WRC)
These changes apply uniformly to both men’s and women’s competitions.
The women’s top tier will now be known as the Uganda Women’s Rugby Premiership (UWRP), while the regional leagues will be named the North (NWRC), Central (CWRC), West (WWRC), and Eastern (EWRC) Women’s Championships.
The URU expressed its gratitude to all stakeholders, including players, coaches, fans, and partners, for their ongoing support and collaboration.
“Together, we will continue to raise the bar for rugby in Uganda,” the statement concluded.
