Uganda Targets Historic World Championship Spot in Lacrosse

The Uganda national lacrosse pool players have been undergoing intensive training every Sunday morning from 9 a.m. to midday at the Makerere University Business School grounds.

The sessions, which began in August 2024, are part of the team’s preparations for the upcoming African qualifiers for the 2026 Women’s Lacrosse World Championship.

The qualifiers, to be announced by the Association of Africa Lacrosse, will see Uganda compete against Kenya and Ghana for the sole African slot at the global tournament.

Speaking to NBS Sport, Uganda Lacrosse Association President, Twesiime Liberty Nuwagira, emphasized the importance of these qualifiers, stating that the ultimate goal is to secure Uganda’s place among the 16 teams that will compete in the final.

“The Association of Africa Lacrosse will soon announce the dates for the African qualifiers, and this will give us the direction in the qualifying journey this year 2025,” Nuwagira said. “Our focus remains steadfast on qualifying for the world stage.”

Under the guidance of Coach Nsubuga Faisal and Angom Winnie, the team has been refining their skills and strategies in preparation for the decisive matches.

The global tournament structure allocates only one spot to Africa, with the remaining 15 distributed among Europe (7), Asia (3 plus the host nation), and the Americas (4). European and Asian qualifiers have already concluded.

The Uganda Lacrosse Association has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the team is well-prepared to face their regional rivals.

With the qualifiers expected to take place later this year, Uganda’s lacrosse community is hopeful that their efforts will secure the nation’s first appearance at the Women’s Lacrosse World Championship.
