172 delegates from Uganda’s secondary schools sports associations (USSSA) and Uganda Primary Schools Sports Association (UPSSA) recently completed a three-day Sports Administration and Management Course at Jinja College.
The intensive training, which commenced on Thursday, January 23rd and concluded on Sunday, January 26th, aimed to equip school sports leaders with essential knowledge and skills to effectively manage and develop sports programs within their respective institutions.
The comprehensive curriculum covered ten key modules, including an introduction to USSSA and its activities, financial management, sports development, and safeguarding of children in sports.
Renowned sports administrators, including USSSA President Emeritus Patrick Alfred Okanya, Emma Kasakya (USSSA Competitions), Viola Kyolaba, Dr. Sajjabi Vincent, and Sam Mpiima, served as facilitators, imparting their expertise to the participants.
Deborah Basekanakyo, the President of the Association of Secondary School Headteachers of Uganda (ASSHU), who graced the closing ceremony, urged the delegates to become agents of change within their schools.
“Let us be the change we want to see!” she emphasized, “After this training, go back as ambassadors, educate the people, and encourage them to do the right thing.”
Highlighting the significance of the training, Patrick Okanya, USSSA President Emeritus, stated, “We brought this course to all regions because we realized there was a gap developing between the National leadership and the leadership at lower levels. To take school sports to another level, we need to develop together.”
Geoffrey Langa, a member of the USSSA Executive Committee, confirmed the participation of delegates from all five zones: Busoga, Bukedi, Teso, Sebei, and Bugisu. A total of 78 participants represented USSSA, while 94 delegates were from UPSSA.
Upon successful completion of the course, all participants were awarded certificates of participation.
