Reigning Ugandan 10,000m national champion Rebecca Chelangat delivered a stellar performance at the 3rd edition of the Sevilla Half Marathon on Sunday, January 26, 2025, in Seville, Spain, breaking the course record in style.
Chelangat, 23, shattered Ethiopia’s Alemtsehay Bimr Zerihun’s previous course record of 1:07.59 set last year, clocking an impressive 1:07.18.
Her victory marked a significant milestone as she reduced the record by 41 seconds.
This was only her second half marathon, having previously clocked a personal best of 1:10.34 at the Bangsaen21 Half Marathon in 2024, where she finished second.
Adding to Uganda’s success, Annet Chemengich Chelangat, another promising runner, secured second place with a time of 1:08.17, completing a Ugandan 1-2 finish.
Ethiopia’s Yalganesh Eskamech Gedefa finished third in 1:08.50.
Chelangat’s victory not only earned her the winner’s prize of €2,000 (approximately UGX 7.7 million) but also an additional €1,000 (approximately UGX 3.8 million) for breaking the course record.
