Kaizer Chiefs delivered a dominant performance at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, dispatching Chippa United 3-0 in their Nedbank Cup Round of 16 clash.
The emphatic victory propels the Amakhosi into the quarter-finals and keeps their hopes of silverware alive.
Gaston Sirino opened the scoring for Chiefs in the 13th minute with a sublime first-time strike from 18 yards, setting the tone for their commanding display.
The home side controlled the tempo of the game, restricting Chippa United to limited counter-attacks.
While Chippa United showed glimpses of threat towards the end of the first half, a spectacular save from Bruce Bvuma on the stroke of half-time preserved Chiefs’ 1-0 lead.
The second half saw Kaizer Chiefs step up their game.
The introduction of George Matlou on the hour mark injected fresh energy into their attack. Inacio Miguel doubled the lead in the 74th minute, confidently converting a penalty after a goalmouth scramble involving Pule Mmodi and Mduduzii Shabalala.
Mmodi capped off the impressive performance with a third goal in the 89th minute, tapping in the rebound after Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali spilled Ranga Chivaviro’s shot.
The final scoreline reflected Kaizer Chiefs’ dominance throughout the match. Their organized pressing, creative midfield play, and clinical finishing proved too much for Chippa United to handle.
This victory marks Kaizer Chiefs’ 14th appearance in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals since 1996-97. Notably, they have won all three of their cup encounters against Chippa United, with Saturday’s win being their biggest margin of victory against the Eastern Cape side in cup competitions.
Furthermore, the Amakhosi are yet to concede a goal in this season’s Nedbank Cup, having scored six goals without reply.
Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting their discipline and attacking intent.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining this momentum as they head into their upcoming Betway Premiership clash against SuperSport United on Tuesday. The team will be buoyed by this victory and will be looking to carry their strong cup form into the league.
For Chippa United, the defeat marks the end of their Nedbank Cup journey. Coach Thabo September will be looking to regroup his players and focus on their league campaign.
