UPL: Vipers Tighten Title Grip with Commanding Win Over KCCA

Vipers SC reaffirmed their dominance in the Uganda Premier League with a clinical 2-0 away victory over KCCA under the floodlights of MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, on Sunday night.

First-half goals from Yunus Sentamu and Allan Okello settled the contest early, extending the Venoms’ lead at the summit to 40 points, three ahead of NEC, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Police FC in Kavumba.

For KCCA, it was another setback in a turbulent season, with their second consecutive defeat of the second round leaving them sixth on 24 points; an alarming 16 adrift of the leaders.

KCCA began brightly, pressing high and nearly taking an early lead when Ashraf Mugume volleyed over the bar in the second minute.

However, once Vipers settled into their rhythm, they dictated proceedings with precision and intent.

The visitors broke the deadlock in the 29th minute through Sentamu’s moment of brilliance.

Midfielder Joel Sseunjogi initiated the attack with a long switch ball, which Karim Watambala controlled before slipping in Sentamu.

The striker turned sharply and curled a stunning effort past goalkeeper Mutwalib Mugolofa into the far corner.

Barely a minute later, Vipers doubled their lead in ruthless fashion. KCCA captain Filbert Obenchan misjudged a clearance from Nicholas Wadada, gifting Okello possession on the edge of the box.

The former KCCA star wasted no time, dispatching a venomous strike past the helpless Mugolofa to silence the home crowd.

In a display of respect, Okello refrained from celebrating, simply raising his hands as his teammates mobbed him.

The goal was his 13th of the season, cementing his place as the league’s top scorer.

KCCA, wounded but not defeated, emerged stronger in the second half, making attacking changes to find a way back.

The introductions of Bright Anukani and Shafik Nana Kwikiriza injected urgency, and the hosts came agonizingly close to halving the deficit.

Mubezi forced a smart save from Vipers goalkeeper Alfred Mudekereza, while Saidi Mayanja squandered a golden opportunity, firing wide from close range.

Controversy struck in the 73rd minute when KCCA’s Sadat Anaku appeared to be tripped in the box by Hilary Mukundane, but referee Dick Okello waved away the appeals, leaving the home side incensed.

Despite their best efforts, KCCA could not break through Vipers’ resolute defense, as the visitors expertly managed the closing stages to seal a vital win.

With this result, Vipers solidified their credentials as title favourites.

Their 12th win in 17 matches not only maintained their lead but also highlighted their efficiency, as they have conceded the fewest goals and boast the league’s top scorer in Okello.

KCCA, on the other hand, are slipping further from contention. Having also lost to NEC just days earlier, their hopes of mounting a late title challenge now hang by a thread.

Vipers SC will look to build on this momentum when they host Mbarara City on March 2, while KCCA will seek redemption away to Maroons on the same day.

Elsewhere, BUL cruised to a 3-0 win over Mbale Heroes, Lugazi edged Wakiso Giants 1-0, and NEC dropped points in their 1-1 draw with Police, further boosting Vipers’ title aspirations.
