Stellenbosch, the rising stars of South African football, are set to face a monumental challenge in their maiden TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
The quarter-final draw, held on Thursday, has pitted them against the formidable Zamalek SC of Egypt, the current holders of the prestigious title.
The news has ignited excitement and anticipation across the Stellenbosch camp, with head coach Steve Barker expressing his enthusiasm for the “titanic clash.”
Despite acknowledging the sheer magnitude of the task at hand, Barker emphasized his team’s determination to leave their mark on the continental stage.
“I think playing a team of such calibre of Zamalek is exciting. A giant on the continent of Africa, serial Champions League winners, defending champions of the Confederation Cup so I think there is a lot of excitement and anticipation for that clash,” Barker stated.
“Looking forward to it because they are a team that is well established with massive pedigree behind them. There is a big challenge ahead of us but one that we relish. We look forward to playing in these competitions against teams like Zamalek.”
Stellenbosch, established just eight years ago, have rapidly ascended the ranks of South African football, showcasing impressive growth and resilience.
Their journey to the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup is a testament to their dedication and talent.
However, facing Zamalek, a club steeped in history and success, presents a significant hurdle.
Barker acknowledged that his team would be considered “underdogs” regardless of their opponent in the quarter-finals. However, he stressed that Stellenbosch FC’s strength lies in their commitment and resilience.
“We were always going to be an underdog no matter who we drew, but we pride ourselves in being a team that is full of commitment and resilience. We want to make our own mark on the continent, and this provides us that opportunity,” he concluded.
The two-legged tie will commence in Cape Town on April 2nd, where Stellenbosch FC will host the reigning champions.
The return leg is scheduled for April 9th in Cairo, where Zamalek will look to capitalize on their home advantage.
