The late Abubakar Lawal will forever be remembered in Vipers SC history as the man who scored the club’s first-ever goal in the CAF Champions League group stages.
His moment of glory came on March 18, 2023, when he found the back of the net in a 1-1 draw against Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
Vipers, under then newly appointed head coach Alex Isabirye, were looking to prove a point after a tough campaign in Africa’s premier club competition.
Despite falling behind in the 18th minute to a Sofianne Benjdida strike, the Ugandan champions refused to back down. They controlled possession, built patiently, and pushed forward with intent.
Then came the historic moment. As the first half drew to a close, Isa Mubiru whipped in a dangerous cross, and Lawal was in the right place at the right time to slot it home.
The crowd erupted as Vipers’ faithful celebrated a goal that meant more than just an equalizer—it was a milestone in the club’s continental journey.
The second half saw Vipers create several chances, with Martin Kizza, Bright Anukani, and Olivier Osomba coming close to sealing victory.
In the dying minutes, Yunus Sentamu almost won it for the Venoms, but Raja Casablanca’s goalkeeper Marouane Fakhr pulled off a miraculous save.
While Vipers failed to progress to the knockout stages, finishing fourth in the group, Lawal’s goal remains a defining moment in the club’s history.
His contribution to Vipers and Ugandan football will not be forgotten.
