La Liga champions Real Madrid suffered a significant setback in their title defense, succumbing to a 2-1 defeat against Real Betis at the Benito Villamarin stadium on Saturday.
The victory, secured by a decisive penalty from former Real Madrid player Isco, has propelled Real Betis to sixth place with 38 points.
Real Madrid initially took control of the game, with Brahim Diaz scoring in the 10th minute following a fluid 19-pass team move.
However, Real Betis responded strongly, with Johnny Cardoso heading in an equalizer from an Isco corner, leveling the score before halftime.
In the second half, Isco converted a penalty, awarded after Antonio Rudiger fouled Jesus Rodriguez, securing the winning goal for Betis.
This result comes as Atletico Madrid prepares to play Athletic Bilbao, with the potential to move to the top of the league standings. Barcelona is set to play Real Sociedad on Sunday.
